1. Registration. Every person playing on an indoor or outdoor court must register before entering the court area. Registration is necessary even if play is on a vacant court. Registration to play on a court does not constitute a reservation of that court.
2. Guests. All guests must be registered in compliance with the guest rules.
3. Reservations Generally. Adult Members and Junior members, subject to the limitations below, may reserve courts as described in this Chapter. In Chapters 120 through 129:
"Adult Member" means an Active member, a JSP, an Emeritus member or any other member with privileges equivalent to an Active member. Social members are not Adult Members.
A "Court Reservation Week" means Monday through Sunday.
Reservations times are 1 hour and 15 minutes long, and begin at 5:30 am, with the last time beginning at 8:30 pm.
4. Making a Reservation. Reservations for an available court will be accepted at the Pro Shop desk and via the GameTime online court booking system.
(a) Seven-Day Limit. Reservations for a court time may be made no earlier than seven days in advance at the conclusion of that court time; for example: reservations for Monday at 6:00 pm may be made no earlier than 7:15 pm on the preceding Monday.
3/25/04: Modified.
(b) Player Names. Reservations will be accepted with the names of no fewer than two players, except for single-player reservations allowed by subsection 6(c). One name must be a member, while the others may be guests.
(c) Substitutions. At the time of play, a different player may be substituted for one or more of the players named on the reservation, provided that (i) only one player may be substituted on a court reserved for singles play, (ii) no more than two players may be substituted on a court reserved for doubles play and (iii) if the reservation, when made, could not have been made by a Junior member, there must be at least one Adult member on the reservation after every substitution. An attempt to make a substitution that is not permitted will be treated as a surrender of the reservation.
(d) No Stand-In Names. Players may not use the name of a member who is not expected to play in order to reserve a court. Repeat violators of this rule are subject to suspension from reserving courts.
(a) Required. Cancellation of reservations is required as soon as any player named in a reservation knows that those who reserved it cannot use (or will not be using) the reserved court, so that others may use it.
(b) Six-Hour Rule. Cancellations will be accepted at the Pro Shop desk and via the GameTime online court booking system. A cancellation made at least six hours before the scheduled court time will not count as a reservation for the purpose of the limitations in Section 3 of Part B, while a cancellation made later than that (or a failure to show up and play) will be treated as a reservation, and as play on a reserved court, for the purpose of those limitations.
10/27/16: Twelve-hour cancellation rule adopted; 2/27/20: Twelve hours shortened to six.
(a) Definitions. An "Open Court Time" is a court time that is not reserved 24 hours before the scheduled start time.
A "Vacant Court Time" is either of the following:
• a court time that is not not reserved at its scheduled start time, or
• a court time for which the players named in the reservation do not show within ten minutes after the scheduled start time.
(b) Use of Vacant Court Time. Priority to a Vacant Court Time is on a first come, first served basis for any member, including Juniors.
However, a player who has already played that day may not use a Vacant Court Time if others are waiting. If others are not waiting, a group that includes one or more players who have already played that day may use a Vacant Court Time, but the group may be bumped at any time by a second group of players, if each player in the second group (i) has not already played that day and (ii) is not named as a player on a reserved court that day. This is the case even if the second group are all Junior members and the first group includes one or more Adult Members.
3/2/06 Amended.
Players may stay on a court beyond the reservation time if the following time period is a Vacant Court Time, subject to the priority rules in the preceding paragraph (under which they would be players who have already played that day).
(c) Single Player Ball Machine Use. A single player may reserve an Open Court Time for ball machine use, but only on the day of such Open Court Time (i.e. after midnight on the day of such Open Court Time). In addition, a single player may take a Vacant Court Time for ball machine use and, once he has started, may hold that court until the end of the Vacant Court Time, in each case subject to the priority rule for Vacant Court Times in subsection (b) above.
7. Waiting List. A waiting list is available for each reserved time. A member may place names on the waiting list at any time and it will not count as a reservation until such time as the member is contacted by the reservations desk, when the member may reserve the court time in the normal manner, and all of the reservation rules will apply.
8. Authority to Override GameTime. No one other than the Tennis Captain, the Director of Tennis and the Pro Shop Manager is permitted to override GameTime for the purpose of making exceptions.
9/27/18: GameTime override rule adopted.
9. Clean up. Members are responsible for cleaning up the court following play. This includes water cups and other trash items as well as use of the court clean-up equipment when necessary, including proper post-play maintenance on the clay courts.
This also includes clean up after ball machine use. Ball machine users must stop play five minutes before the end of the court time to return balls to the ball machine, clear the ball machine from court and clean the court.
(a) Regular Events. Ladies’ Day has priority on all courts on Thursdays from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm, except court 14. Ladies' Day has priority on court 14 when the pros do not need the court and when the program has a waitlist of overflow players. Men’s Night has priority on all courts on Monday evenings. Ladies’ Night has priority on all courts on Tuesday evenings.
3/22/18: Adopted second sentence, regarding court 14 and Ladies' Day.
(b) Cup and USTA. Cup and USTA matches have priority on such courts and at such times as determined by the Tennis Captain and the tennis professionals. Nonmembers and Social members who are members of USTA teams are exempted from certain guest rules as provided in Chapter 114.
(c) Tennis Week. Players playing Tennis Week matches have priority on such courts and at such times as determined by the Tennis Captain, the tennis professionals and the Pro Shop reservations staff.
(d) Other Events. Other tennis tournaments and events may take priority over tennis courts. See Chapter 129(E).
11. Risk. Persons using the sports facilities of the Club do so at their own risk.
1. Peak Court Times. Indour court reservation times are designated as "Peak" or "Non-Peak." A "Peak Reservation" means a reservation of a court at a Peak time, except as described in Section 4.
Peak court times are
9:15 am, 10:30 am, 3:30 pm, and 4:45 pm Monday through Friday;
6:00 pm Monday through Thursday; and
9:15 am Saturday.
All other reservation times are "Non-Peak."

2. Juniors. Junior members may not make Peak Reservations. However, Junior members may:
• be listed as players on a reservations made by an Adult Member;
• make reservations for Non-Peak court times; and
• make reservations for Peak court times that are not reserved 24 hours in advance, as described below.
The Board of Trustees may from time to time grant to a Junior member the privilege of reserving courts as if he or she were an Active member.
6/22/06: MSP to grant to Elizabeth Lewis senior tennis privileges for tennis court reservations and the same guest privileges as a Single Active Member.
5/25/06: MSP to grant Davis Mangham senior tennis privileges and the same guest privileges as a Single Active Member.
(a) Outstanding Reservations. At any one time, a member may not have outstanding more than two indoor court reservations, nor more than one Peak Reservation; so that a member may have one Peak Reservation and one non-Peak Reservation or two non-Peak Reservations on the books at the same time. In applying this rule, every member named as a player on a reservation has an outstanding reservation for the relevant court time, and not only the member who made the reservation.
(b) Per Day and Per Week Limits. A player may not play on more than:
• one court reserved as a Peak Reservation per day;
• three courts reserved as Peak Reservations per Court Reservation Week;
• five reserved courts (including Peak and non-Peak Reservations) per Court Reservation Week.
4/27/17: Per day limit adopted. Previously, the per day limit applied only to peak times.
(c) Exceptions. For the purpose of the limitations in this Section 3, none of the following will be counted as a reservation or as play on a reserved court: a tennis lesson with a Club tennis pro; playing in Ladies Day, Ladies Night or Men's Night; participating in a Cup or USTA team practice (subject to the next sentence); or playing in a Cup or USTA team match. Team practices are limited to two courts during Peak court times. Team members may not reserve a third court for the workout if it is during a Peak court time.
4. Reservation of Open Court Times. Once a Peak time has become an Open Court Time, it may be reserved as if it were a Non-Peak time. As a result:
• it may be reserved by a Junior member;
• it will be treated as a non-Peak Reservation in applying the limitation on outstanding reservations; and
• it will be treated as a non-Peak Reservation in applying the limitation on reservations per day or week.
5. Tennis Only. All indoor tennis courts are to be used for indoor tennis play only, except as approved by the Tennis Committee and the Board of Trustees.
10/26/23: Added rule limiting indoor court use to tennis play.
(b) Pro Courts. Courts 9 and 10 are reserved for the tennis professionals for teaching.
(c) Junior Program. The Junior program may use courts 5, 6, 7 and 8 during program hours.
2. Pickleball. See Chapter 122.
1. No-Shows. The following penalties shall be imposed by the Tennis Captain on any member who fails either to arrive to play on a reserved court or to cancel the reservation before the scheduled start time:
• first offense: warning;
• second offense: two-week suspension from use of the courts;
• third and subsequent offenses: 30-day suspension from use of the courts.
Appeals can be submitted to the Tennis Captain for review and consideration.
2/27/20 No-show disciplinary rule adopted by Board.
If players choose to play outside rather than inside, they still must cancel their indoor court reservation to avoid being treated as a no-show.
2. Unregistered Guests. The following penalties shall be imposed by the Tennis Captain on any member found to have played tennis with an unregistered guest (including without limitation a Social member):
• first offense: warning;
• second offense: two-week suspension from use of the courts;
• third and subsequent offenses: 30-day suspension from use of the courts.
Appeals can be submitted to the Tennis Captain for review and consideration.
2/27/20 Guest disciplinary rule adopted by Board.
3. Reservation Rules. The purpose of the court reservation rules above is to try to maximize the use of the courts by as many members as possible, as well as giving members the ability to manage their play. This requires members to follow the rules so that everyone can use courts as they become available. Since changes in the rules have opened up the ability to reserve and play on more courts, the penalties will be stricter for those who violate them. The Tennis Captain has authority and discretion to impose appropriate penalties for the circumstances and repetition of the violation. Penalties may include cancellation of existing reservations, suspension from making court reservations for up to thirty days and suspension from the use of the courts for up to thirty days. The Tennis Captain may impose penalties based on a factual finding by a Club employee without any hearing.
4. Mission. Above all is the Club's commitment to our Mission Statement which states, in part, that the Club’s century old mission is: "promoting an atmosphere of camaraderie, friendship, and superior service to its members and their families; ... and providing an excellent working environment for its staff." Thus, we will respect each and every member of the Club and its staff. Unsportsmanlike conduct on the court and rude or other inappropriate conduct off the court will not be tolerated and may result in suspension or other disciplinary action, which may include discipline pursuant to either or both of Article VI, Section 6(b) and Article II, Section 1 of the Club's Bylaws.
