1. Qualification To Use Equipment. Use of boathouse equipment is limited to those members who are listed as qualified for the particular type of equipment and have on file a card signed by the member, if eighteen or over, or the member’s parent, if the using member is under age eighteen. The qualifications necessary to use a particular type of equipment shall be determined by the boathouse staff and made available to members on request. All members must pass a swim test as described in Part B to qualify for boathouse equipment use.
2. Equipment Check Out and Stowage. All equipment must be checked out prior to use by filling out the check-out sheet and signing in upon return of equipment.
3. Time Limits. Boathouse staff may establish time limits for use of equipment in order to assure availability for lessons or others’ use.
4. Geographic Limits. Boathouse equipment may not be landed on shore except at the Club or taken beyond the limits set by the boathouse staff.
See the specific geographic limits below for sailboats and wherries and shells.
5. Flotation Devices. Members must wear Coast Guard approved personal flotation devices while using sailboats, paddleboards and canoes, and must have such a device available in shells and wherries, or wear such a device in a shell or wherry if required by boathouse personnel.
6. Prohibited Conduct. Swimming, running and roughhousing are not permitted on the pier and boating float area.
7. Enforcement. Sinking or intentional mishandling of any equipment and disruptive, unsafe or uncooperative behavior will result in a suspension of the use of boathouse equipment by the offender and may lead to other disciplinary action.
8. Financial Responsibility. Each member shall be responsible for cost of repair or replacement of any equipment damaged due to that member’s negligent or intentional mishandling.
9. Additional Rules. The boathouse staff may make additional rules regarding use of the dock, boathouse and boating equipment, so long as they are consistent with other Club rules and policies and any action by the Board of Trustees. Additional rules will be posted in the boathouse.
1. Tests. All members using Tennis Club owned watercraft shall demonstrate water safety by passing one of two tests:
(a) Float for ten minutes in the pool or lake while wearing a long-sleeve shirt or pants, and don a lifejacket at the end of the 10-minute floating period.
(b) Swim 500 yards nonstop in the pool (twenty lengths of the pool).
3/26/92: Adopted Section 1, swim test.
2. Juniors. Only swimming personnel may pass a Junior member on a swim test. After completion of the test, the swimming personnel must indicate that the Junior has passed the test and the date passed, and sign the authorization card filed at the boathouse.
3. Not Annual. The swim test need only be taken once, not on a yearly basis.
1. Age Limit. All members must be at least 16 years old or older to check out any standup paddleboard.
2. No Reservations. Standup paddleboards cannot be reserved ahead of time.
3. Time Limit. There is a 90-minute limit for use of standup paddleboards.
4. Geographic Limits. The general boathouse rules in Part A are applicable to the use of standup paddleboards, including Section 4.
1. General Rules. The general boathouse rules in part A are applicable to the use of wherries and shells.
2. Qualification To Use Equipment. Wherries are training boats and may be used by qualified members and guests. Shells are racing equipment and require special qualification. To use wherries or shells, members and guests are required to pass a proficiency test set by the boathouse staff, and may only use those boats which the boathouse staff determines they are qualified to use.
3. Geographic Limits. Except as set forth below, members and guests may not row beyond the center of the lake or the floating bridge on the north or the foot of Madrona Drive on the south.
4. Special Qualifications. The boathouse staff may set tests and other qualifications and shall determine which members are "experienced oarsmen" and "expert oarsmen," and maintain a list of those members. If on that list:
(a) experienced oarsmen may go beyond the geographic limits when the boathouse staff determines weather and training conditions are safe; and
(b) expert oarsmen may go beyond the geographic limits, and may use the boathouse equipment outside of ordinary boathouse hours.
1. Qualification To Use Equipment. Members and guests may use the sailboats only if they are: (i) qualified as at least a novice skipper as described below or (ii) riding in the boat with someone who is so qualified or a boathouse staffer.
2. Ability Ratings. The boathouse staff shall set tests, as described in subsection (b), and other qualifications, and determine which members are "novice skippers," "skippers," and "heavy weather skippers." The boathouse staff shall maintain a list of the members qualified in each class, for each type of sailboat.
(a) General standards. In general:
(i) A "novice skipper" must be able to properly rig and de-rig whatever boat he or she wishes to use and have a minimal amount of sailing ability.
(ii) A "skipper" is a novice skipper who also passes the additional practical on-water test described below.
(iii) A "heavy-weather skipper" is a skipper who the head sailing instructor determines is so qualified.
(b) Testing procedures.
(i) To qualify as a novice skipper, a member must pass the boathouse written exam. The boathouse written exam is available at the boathouse whenever it is open and an attendant is on duty. The exam covers STC boathouse guidelines and check-out procedures, as well as basic sailing etiquette, safety, and skills. A member need only pass the boathouse written exam once.
(ii) To qualify as a novice skipper, a member must also go through a rigging checklist with a boathouse attendant. After a member passes the boathouse written exam, a boathouse attendant will assign him or her a sailboat and go through the rigging checklist for that type of boat before leaving the dock. A member must go through a separate rigging checklist for a particular type of sailboat before sailing that type of boat.
(iii) To qualify fully as a novice skipper, a member must also pass a practical on-water test to demonstrate minimal sailing ability in at least seven knots of wind. Such a test will be scheduled on the same day the member meets the qualifications in clauses (i) and (ii) (if there is at least seven knots of wind, and subject to the availability of boathouse staff), or as soon as practicable thereafter. While awaiting the opportunity to take such a test, a member may (at the discretion of the boathouse staff), sail a sailboat in under seven knots of wind. A member may be required to take a separate practical test in a particular type of sailboat before sailing that type of boat.
(iv) To qualify as a skipper, a member must pass a practical on-water test in at least fifteen knots of wind, including capsizing and righting the boat, a man overboard drill, and sailing rudderless. A member may be required to take a separate practical test in a particular type of sailboat before sailing that type of boat
3. Geographic Limits. Novice skippers must stay in the area bounded by a line drawn
(a) from the shore to the racing mark directly east of the Club,
(b) to the next mark south of the Club off the point, and
(d) back to shore west of that mark.
Skippers and heavy-weather skippers must stay in the area bounded by the floating bridges on the north and south, and on the east by the line drawn between the east ends of the bridges.
4. Weather Conditions. The boathouse staff may post a "no novice" sign based on weather conditions, and when it is posted:
(i) Novice skippers may not use the sailboats.
(ii) Skippers must remain within the geographic limit ordinarily applicable to novice skippers.
(iii) Only heavy-weather skippers may sail outside that limit.
The boathouse staff may further limit use of the sailboats, or prohibit use altogether by members of any qualification, based on weather conditions.
1. Member Boats Only. Members may register their boats and receive a boat pass. Only boats of Active members or guests of members displaying a dock pass or having written permission from the General Manager may be tied up at the pier, except as described below.
2. Large Boats. The dock must be reserved for boats that exceed 30 feet – reservations are taken at the Front Desk.
3. No Jet Skis. Jet Skis are not allowed to dock at the boat dock.
4. No Overnight Moorage. No overnight moorage is permitted unless pre-authorized by the General Manager.
5. Chartered Boats. Docking privileges shall be granted to chartered boats only when they are being used in conjunction with a member-sponsored or Club function.
